University of North Sumatra, Indonesia
The University of North Sumatra (Indonesian: Universitas Sumatera Utara) or (USU) was inaugurated on 24 June 1952 as “Foundation Universitet North Sumatera”. The establishment of this foundation was led by governor of North Sumatera. People of Sumatera were demanding establishment of an educational institute since before World War 2 but these demands were not fulfilled at that time by the Dutch Government. The medical faculty was established on 20th August 1952. On 20th November, 1957 the Indonesian President granted the status of seventh Indonesian “state university” to University of Sumatera Utara. The establishment of USU was the result of material assistance, cooperation and moral support from the North Sumateran community including the territory of Aceh.
USU has expanded massively in last 60 years. The first faculty was medicine which was established in 1952, there were several additions such as Law, Engineering, Social Sciences, Political Sciences and Mathematics over the decades. The latest addition was School of Nursing in 2009. At present USU has 14 faculties. USU offers various courses at diploma, bachelor, master and doctorate level. Around 33,000 students are currently studying in various departments of USU.
University of Sumatera Utara is located in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatera, Indonesia. The campus is situated in Padang Bulan, an area in Medan Baru (New Medan). The 122 hectare campus is not very far away; it is at a mere distance of 6 km from the city center. A new campus is under construction at Kwala Bekala (which is at a distance of 15 km from the old campus) to accommodate the increasing number of students.
Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
Faculty of Medicine was established in 1952 and has developed tremendously in last 61 years. It now has 14 departments and four special training centers. The curriculum of the medical school is focused on community medicine. There are hundreds of students enrolled in various courses offered at the school of medicine. The specialties offered by school of medicine are Internal Medicine, Science of Eye Diseases, Ear disease, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery, Nerve Medicine (Neurology), Pulmonary Medicine, Child Health, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Science of Clinical Pathology, Anesthesia and Intensive Therapy, Forensic Medicine, Pathology Sciences, Science Imaging (Radiology), Soul Medicine (Psychiatry), Health Science Dermatology, Pathology of the Heart and Blood Vessels, Science of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic and Traumatology Science. The school also offers diplomas and courses in biomedical sciences, tropical diseases and clinical sciences. The school of medicine is doing extensive research in the field of tropical medicine and malignant diseases in Indonesia.
University of North Sumatra’s faculty of dentistry was established in 1961 and now has 10 departments. These departments include Department of Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Science of Oral Surgery, Dental Science of Conservation, Periodonsia, Science of Oral Diseases, Science of Child Dental Health, Oral Biology, Science of Materials and Technology, Science of Preventive Dentistry / Dental Public Health and the Dental Radiology Unit. USU’s school of Dentistry provides education in field of dentistry, which is based on student learning activities. The training is based on the development of science and technology and to fulfill the needs of the community in the field of oral health. USU’s aim is to produce Dentists who are knowledgeable and skilled as well as responsible and virtuous having noble character in accordance with the ethics of the profession of dentistry.

The environment at University of North Sumatra is very suitable and welcoming for the international students specially the Malaysians. It takes only 40 minutes for a flight from Malaysia to reach Medan. The weather, food and language are very similar to that in Malaysia. Many Indians also adjust very easily because of a large Indian and Malaysian population in the city. USU is a highly professional university which doesn’t make any compromise on its standards and therefore it is one of the best institutes in Southeast Asia.
