Specialising in Medicine programme Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) has established an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia. The speciality of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia is the programmes of study are identical to those of Newcastle’s UK based provision; award same degree, conferred by Newcastle University, UK but at a cost less than of studying less than that of studying for the same degree in UK.
MBBS was launched in 2009 with the aim of delivering medical programme of the highest quality with cost effective. NUMed aims to provide an education responsive to the changing needs of the Malaysian Healthcare system and properly prepared for the global health economy of the 21st century. NUMed is focused in delivering highly motivated graduates in affordable, world class medical education, irrespective of background. NUMed Malaysia is working in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians to develop world class clinical and educational training opportunities in South East Asia.
How do I get there?
NuMed campus is situated in Nusajaya, Johor in Iskandar Malaysia. It is a part of Edu City in Iskandar, 1km east of Gelang Patah Interchange on the main Linkedua Expressway. The Second Crossing Bridge to Singapore is only 8km from the campus and the city of Johor Bahru is nearby. Iskandar Development Region provides a modern lifestyle full of business, living and leisure. The students will be studying in new campus building with first class facilities and live in secured residences.
MBBS programme in NUMed will provide a general medical education, suitable for all types doctor and serve as the foundation for later career specialisation. NuMed Malaysia has only 1 intake every year in September. Malaysian applicants can apply early as only limited number of places are available.
The overall coast of MBBS in NUMed Malaysia is around 40% less than cost of obtaining same degrees in UK. There are no hidden costs in NUMed Malaysia, only a single inclusive fee to cover tuition, library, laboratory, placements, examinations, administration fees and all other academic related charges. Approximately Malaysian students need RM95,000 per annum for each of 5 years programme and international students RM105,000 per annum for each of 5 years programme. NUMed fees not inclusive of accommodation.
Financial aid available in NUMed is form of scholarships and loans. Scholarships for Malaysian students are provided by
- Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) is available to Bumiputera students who wish to study for the MBBS at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia. The sponsorship is under MARA’s Open Application Scheme.
NUMed does not offer scholarships to International Students.
NUMed Malaysia students must have English proficiency and age requirements of the University. Proficiency in English will be judged further at the Medical Student Interview. Applicants who have SPM, O Level or equivalent programmes must complete a recognised pre university qualification as a basic requirement for entry to an undergraduate degree at NUMed Malaysia.
Selection will be based on a combination of:
- Your pre-university examination results (or forecast results)
- Your performance in the Medical Student Interview
- Proficiency in English
Pre University examinations include A Level, International Baccalaureate Diploma, STPM, EUC, and Matriculation with inclusive of Science subjects as Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.
In NUMed all applicants must complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and required to go for medical check-up including immunisations and screening of blood borne virus. Applicants in NUMed must comply with minimum health requirements and failure to disclose may be grounds for discontinuation of your studies. Even any criminal record will enable to study in NUMed or practise medicine. NUMed Malaysia reserves the right to discontinue a student’s studies if evidence of criminal activity comes to light during the course of their studies.
Newcastle University Medicine in Malaysia does not allow transferring your studies from the MBBS programme to equivalent course delivered at their campus in UK. Upon successful completion of the entire programme you will be awarded Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Honours, which will be conferred by Newcastle University UK. The Newcastle University medical degrees MB BS awarded to NUMed Malaysia graduates lead to professional recognition and are subject to the requirements of both the UK General Medical Council (GMC) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
